Accelerating Africa’s Development through a US-Africa Trade and Investment Partnership

Trade and investment constitute a key pillar in US-Africa ties. US enterprise engagement has often focused on single countries given the absence of a large-scale One African Market. But the new African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) has helped Africa find its place and its voice, creating a solid value proposition for businesses to expand across the continent. Opportunities in Africa created by AfCFTA include: 

• Access to emerging markets and value chains including automotives, leather and leather products, lithium-ion batteries, clothing and textiles, soya, cocoa, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, mobile financial services, and cultural services. 
• Entry through investment, allowing access to preferential treatment created by the AfCFTA. 
• Harmonized regulatory, legal, and dispute resolution regimes that effectively facilitate trade and investment engagement. 

This hybrid discussion will address a new US-Africa trade and investment partnership as a development accelerator, with leading voices from development, academia, and business, to craft solutions for a robust partnership.
