Grant 7

Planning and financing climate-secure city development in Tunisia

The objective of the pilot is to support sustainable, climate-secure urban planning and financing environments in Tunisia by developing solutions for more inclusive, integrated urban planning that is evidence based and climate-risk informed for the city of Kairouan.

The project conducted a project inception workshop in 2022 in Kairouan which resulted in a narrower focus of the project activities on water resources and disaster risk management, especially flood control, water storage and sanitation-related activities linked with climate-secure livelihoods, based on priorities of the municipality and local communities.

The pilot focuses on waste and wastewater management for enhanced climate resilience, and rehabilitation of cisterns to enhance water security and water management for climate security in Kairouan. The project also focuses on rainwater harvesting, development of a green area for the provision of ecosystem services to Kairouan, protection of watercourses to enhance water quality, waste and wastewater management to enhance clean water availability, and nature-based solutions for enhanced water security for food production. It is expected that the project will directly benefit 2,200 inhabitants of Kairouan Municipality.
