Areni, Vayots Dzor Province. 08.10.2024 – The Areni consolidated community in Vayots Dzor region proudly announced the installation of 78 new solar-powered streetlights, a major step toward sustainable development and eco-tourism in the region. This initiative, funded under the EU4Dialogue grant scheme, aims to enhance energy efficiency, promote renewable energy, and improve the security and road safety conditions for the local community.

The event was attended by Anna Gyurjyan, UNDP Socio-Economic Development Portfolio Manager; Aram Kostanyan, Head of Programs at the Vayots Dzor Governor’s Office; Husik Sahakyan, Mayor of Areni consolidated community; and representatives from various NGOs.

A Milestone for Green Energy and Sustainable Development

The “Share the Sun” project, which was implemented from January to September 2024, mainly focused on the installation of 78 solar-powered streetlights throughout the community. The newly installed lights, each equipped with on-board batteries and expected to last up to five years, will illuminate a 2-kilometer section of the North-South highway from Chiva to Areni. This will improve road safety, reduce the municipality’s electricity costs, and support the community’s eco-tourism potential.

With this project, Areni is set to reduce its annual energy consumption and CO2 emissions, contributing to Armenia's broader efforts to combat climate change. The village, known for its rich winemaking history and archaeological heritage, will also benefit from an enhanced tourist experience as the streetlights add to the charm of its nighttime environment.

Economic and Social Benefits

The new streetlights are estimated to save the Areni municipality around AMD 3 million annually, freeing up resources for other critical local projects, such as irrigation and water management. In addition to the economic benefits, the project has empowered community members by raising awareness about renewable energy and environmental issues. Sixty residents, including women and youth, have received training, positioning them as local advocates for green energy solutions.

Areni’s Path to Sustainability

The Areni solar streetlight project is just one of many initiatives under the EU4Dialogue grant scheme aimed at promoting peace, social cohesion and resilience among communities affected by conflict. In the Vayots Dzor region, EU4Dialogue support included the installation of solar PV panels at 6 locations, 26 sets of solar water heaters, and 42 sets of electrical shepherds, as well as support for refugee families who received home appliances, kitchen utensils, furniture, and bedding. The region’s focus on sustainable peace is a crucial step in transitioning toward an eco-friendly future.
