As climate change continues to increase disaster risks across the Asia-Pacific region, the need for inclusive disaster risk reduction (DRR) and early warning systems (EWS) has never been more critical. Governments, international organizations, and development agencies must collaborate to bridge existing gaps and enhance their disaster risk reduction (DRR) efforts to ensure that no one is left behind.

As part of the Regional Tsunami Project by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Japan, UNDP and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), invite you to a side event at the 12th Asia-Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development (APFSD).

In collaboration with key partners (the Embassy of Japan in Thailand, JICA, ESCAP, WMO, UNDRR, and ITU), the session will examine how inclusive, evidence-based disaster resilience strategies can protect at-risk communities. Moreover, it will dive into how regional cooperation, particularly through Japan’s 70 years of Official Development Assistance (ODA) for DRR, is strengthening preparedness and response mechanisms.

Driving Evidence-Based and Inclusive DRR Strategies

This event is a strategic platform for government representatives, policymakers, educators, and UN agencies to exchange insights on strengthening DRR investments and policies. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with leading experts and organizations working on the Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative and disaster risk reduction efforts.

Speakers will highlight:

  • Early Warnings for All (EW4All) Initiative – Progress, challenges, and strategies to enhance inclusivity and reach remote and marginalized populations.
  • Tsunami Risk Reduction in Schools and Communities – Lessons learned from UNDP’s partnerships with Japan to strengthen preparedness measures, including evacuation drills and policy integration.
  • DRR Investments optimizations – Insights from JICA’s 70 years of development cooperation on the enablers and barriers to inclusive and effective disaster resilience financing.
  • Gender and Disability Inclusion in DRR – advocacy for shock-responsive, inclusive social protection policies in the Asia-Pacific region.

Ensuring No One is Left Behind in Disaster Preparedness

The Asia-Pacific region remains highly vulnerable to disasters, making it imperative to strengthen multi-hazard early warning systems that are accessible to all. By leveraging lessons from Japan’s ODA, regional partnerships, and ongoing DRR initiatives, this session will reinforce the role of inclusive EWSs and disaster risk reduction efforts in safeguarding lives and livelihoods.
