Myanmar’s Enduring Polycrisis: Four Years into a Tumultuous Journey

January 27, 2025

Myanmar is grappling with an unprecedented "polycrisis" that has reshaped every aspect of life over the past four years. This report delves into the multifaceted challenges the country faces, including political instability, the far-reaching impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, entrenched conflict, economic disruptions, severe human rights violations, and worsening environmental degradation.

Public health systems are severely strained, and educational opportunities have diminished, leading to a decline in human capital. Forced conscription, limited job opportunities, and deteriorating socio-economic conditions have driven a youth and skills exodus, depleting the nation's workforce. With half of the population living below the poverty line, millions are pushed into poverty, exacerbated by rural-to-urban migration and displacement caused by conflict.

Agricultural productivity is sharply declining, intensifying food insecurity, particularly in states like Rakhine and Chin. Environmental challenges, including deforestation and mangrove loss, have exacerbated climate impact risks, further threatening community livelihoods. The international community must adapt its support strategies to mitigate the most severe regressions while building community resilience to ongoing and future shocks.

The report highlights the need for active international engagement and negotiation with all parties involved to help Myanmar navigate through its current challenges. A more stable and peaceful Myanmar, thriving on a legal economy, protecting its human and natural resource assets, and investing in the safety and prosperity of all its people, is also in the self-interest of its neighbors and the international community at large. This comprehensive analysis underscores the urgency of coordinated efforts to address the deepening crises and pave the way for a resilient and prosperous future for Myanmar.
