The UNDP Azerbaijan mission visited Nakchivan

Nakhchivan, July 22nd, 2024. The UNDP Azerbaijan Country Office delegation was on an official mission to the Autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan. The delegation headed by Alessandra Roccasalvo, the UNDP Resident Representative a.i. in Azerbaijan, met with Fuad Najafli, the Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The climate change, environmental protection, green energy potential of the region and other issues were discussed at the meeting that was held with specific reference to the sustainable development prospects of the autonomous republic.

At the meeting with Jeyhun Jalilov, the Prime Minister of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, constructive discussions on strengthening partnership relations were held. The importance of the steps to be taken in the direction of socio-economic development of the region with the technical support of the United Nations Development Programme was noted.

Another productive meeting was held with Gunay Rzayeva, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. It was noted that strengthening of the existing cooperative relations between the institutions is of great importance. 

The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the Law and Human Rights Institute and the United Nations Development Programme jointly organized a conference on “Climate Change and Human Rights”. 

Civil servants and local authorities, representatives of civil society institutions, as well as environmental volunteers participated at the conference held in the Nakhchivan Business Center.

Ms. Roccasalvo attended the event in the framework of the official visit to the autonomous republic. During her speech, the UNDP Resident Representative a.i. in Azerbaijan highlighted the impact of global climate change on various fields by talking about the importance of new approaches and cooperation in this direction.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference, the Sustainable Development Goals, COP29 and other topics were widely discussed.
