Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme

Background

Established in 1992, following the Rio Earth Summit, the Global Environmental Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF/SGP) is a corporate programme of the Global Environment Facility. The GEF/SGP is implemented by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on behalf of the World Bank, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and UNDP; executed by United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

The goal of the Programme is to secure global environmental benefits through community-based initiatives and actions. With the slogan, ‘community action global impact’, the Programme recognizes the contribution of communities in mitigating environmental challenges at local level and collectively contributing to the global environmental benefits. In this regard, the GEF/SGP is aligned and contributes to attainment of aspirations and visions at both the global, regional and national levels. In Botswana, the chapter commenced its operations in 1992 and having been supporting government efforts in ensuring the realization of sustainable development.

Eligibility Requirements

The GEF/SGP provides both technical and financial support to non-profit oriented institutions such as; Civil Society Organizations (Non-Governmental Organizations and Community-Based Organizations), Academia and Research Institutions. The Programme provides grants ranging from USD 2,000.00 to USD 50,000.00 to enable CSOs to tackle global environmental challenges and tap on opportunities for local sustainable development needs. The proposal submitted must fall within the focal/strategic areas of the programme.

Results

Since implementation, the Programme has supported 200 projects. Projects funded at a tune of <USD 5, 300, 000 of varying successes within different focal areas.
