In Botswana's Okavango region, women have transformed Real fan palm leaves into beautiful, intricate baskets for generations. But today, their craft is putting their vision at risk. Long hours of weaving and materials used are causing severe eye strain, threatening their ability to provide for their families.
Women like 60-year-old Mme Kutsira, who has supported her family of 15 through weaving since she was 14, are now losing their eyesight. With diminished vision, her income has dropped as she can no longer create intricate patterns she once did with ease. Mme Kare Setoya has already lost sight in one eye, forcing her daughter to put her education on hold, to assist her mother.
This crisis affects 250 women who risk losing both their vision and their livelihoods. But with your help, we can revitalise their communities.
