The United Nations Development Programme today joined leaders from the New Development Bank (NBD) and the Chinese Ministry of Finance as well as senior representatives from global multilateral institutional, government and academia at an international seminar held after the new bank’s opening ceremony in Shanghai.

In his remarks at the event, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Alain Noudehou explored the challenges and opportunities associated with the NDB. He paid particular attention to the ways in which the NDB might cooperate with existing international financial institutions, multilateral development organizations like UNDP, and academia.

Mr Noudehou also emphasized that UNDP stands ready to provide technical assistance to the bank, drawing on UNDP’s extensive development experience. Of special relevance to the NDB, said Mr. Noudehou, is UNDP’s depth of expertise on policy work with government and on the assessment of the social and environment impacts made by development financing and programming.
