Preserving Biodiversity: Analysing Poison Use in Remote Wildlife

Objectives

The aim of this project is to study and analyse the reasons and extent of the use of poison in the countryside, by the local communities, across Cyprus. The study results will be used for the protection of wildlife. The study aims to identify the reasons behind the use of poison in the countryside, propose incident analysis methodologies, create demonstration sites for poison alternatives, coordinate efforts to improve mitigation strategies and strengthen the collaboration among relevant stakeholders.

The objectives of this activity listed by the Technical Committee are to:

  • Identify the reasons behind the use of poison across the island for wildlife protection;

  • Assess the impact of poison use on wildlife populations and their habitats, including species affected, mortality rates, and ecosystem impacts;

  • Develop incident analysis methodologies for poisoning incidents;

  • Raise awareness and providing training and informational materials on the use and effect of the poison on the environment among relevant stakeholders;

  • Develop visuals and GIS (Geographical Information System) tools for mapping and analysing the distribution and patterns of poison used in the countryside;

  • Synchronise the findings with the existing studies to create coherent data and new insights on the issue;

  • Creation of demonstration sites for showing alternatives to poison use.

 This project is ongoing. Project results will be updated in due course.
