Completion of Conservation works at the Agios Georgios Church

Nicosia, 5th December 2024 – The Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage (TCCH), has completed the conservation works at the Agios Georgios church in Flamoudi/Mersinlik, within the framework of the “Support to cultural heritage monuments of great importance for Cyprus”, a project funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). 

This was marked by a visit with the participation of the TCCH Co-Chairs, members of the Advisory Board, representatives from the European Commission, the Office of the Special Adviser of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus and UNDP, the technical team and members of the public. 


The Agios Georgios church is situated at the beginning of the Karpas Peninsula. The main works included the rebuilding of the bell tower and the dismantling and reconstruction of the roof. Internal plaster and floor repairs were also carried out, along with the treatment of the women’s gallery, openings, iconostasis, and metal elements using compatible materials. Deformed sections of the retaining walls were reconstructed, and the existing parts were repaired to ensure structural integrity.
