19 January 2019 - J.W. Marriot Hotel has celebrated on the launching of the first photovoltaic roof-top solar powered station for electricity generation with the participation of H.E Dr Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Dr Rania El-Mashat, Minister of Tourism, Dr. Yasmin Fouad, Minister of Environment, Eng Ahmed Taha, Executive Director for Industrial Modernization Center and Ms Randa Aboul-Hosn, UNDP Resident Representative. The solar energy station of 150 KW capacity was established through technical and financial support from UNDP-GEF Grid Connected Small Scale Photovoltaic System Project that is implemented by the Industrial Modernization Center (IMC). The objective of the project is to support expansion of using roof top solar energy systems in residential, commercial public buildings, hotels and industrial facilities, develop the small sale renewable energy technologies markets in Egypt, facilitate its installation, increase national contribution in assembly of solar systems, build national technical capacities to create new jobs.
Ms Randa Aboul-Hosn has clarified that the project objective supports implementation of the national Sustainable Development Strategy and SDG7 and capitalize on Egypt’s abundant solar energy and reduce Green House Gases (GHG) emissions as per Paris Agreement. This station is the first solar energy station that UNDP-GEF project supports in a hotel in Cairo while hoping that the dissemination of the technical and financial feasibility study will encourage the hotel sector in Egypt to establish such stations in Egypt.J.W.
