UNDP Resident Representative Alessandro Fracassetti’s Speech at the Mainstreaming Biodiversity in Tourism – closing event

July 16, 2024

Dear Excellencies, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,

  • It is a pleasure to welcome you to this closing event for the Mainstreaming Biodiversity in Egypt's Tourism project.
  • This four-year initiative was funded by the Global Environment Facility and Egypt’s Ministry of Environment.
  • It was implemented by UNDP in partnership with national and local authorities.
  • The project has achieved remarkable successes.

Context on the Importance of Ecotourism and Biodiversity Protection

  • Globally, ecotourism is vital for promoting environmental conservation and providing economic benefits.
  • It represents a sustainable way to develop tourism that respects and preserves the natural environment.
  • By attracting visitors to natural areas, ecotourism raises awareness about the importance of conserving biodiversity.
  • It encourages the protection of endangered species and habitats, ensuring these natural treasures are maintained for future generations.
  • Furthermore, ecotourism provides significant economic benefits, particularly to local communities.
  • It creates jobs, generates income, and promotes sustainable livelihoods.
  • This form of tourism often relies on local guides, accommodation providers, and other services, which helps to distribute economic benefits more equitably within communities.
  • By linking economic incentives with conservation goals, ecotourism shows that protecting biodiversity can also support sustainable development.
  • It illustrates how we can achieve a balance where both nature and human communities thrive.

What has this project helped achieve over the last four years?

Achievements in Tourism Planning and Development

  • We prepared the National Sustainable Tourism Strategy, now adopted by the Ministry of Tourism.
  • We advocated for policy, legal, and institutional frameworks to support ecotourism and biodiversity conservation.
  • This led to key decisions like implementing a permit system for activities in protected areas, banning plastic bags in Sharm El Sheikh, and establishing a Nature-based Tourism Committee under the Egyptian Tourism Federation.

Achievements in Sustainable Tourism Practices

  • We developed ecolodge establishment guidelines with the Tourism Development Authority. Now, the Ministry of Tourism can issue licenses to ecolodges for the first time.
  • We supported the Green Star programme, doubling the number of certified hotels.
  • Our Green Fins initiative also doubled the number of certified diving centers, now over 40.
  • We launched the first-ever Egyptian Sustainable Tourism Portal, providing information on sustainability standards and resource efficiency in tourism.

Achievements in Protected Areas, Ecotourism, and Local Communities

  • We improved management in protected areas by developing management and visitor plans for four protected areas.
  • We launched ‘ECO EGYPT,’ the first nationwide ecotourism awareness and protected area promotion campaign. We also supported sustainable livelihoods for local communities through training and technical support.

Anecdote About the Project Involving People

  • Local communities played a crucial role in this project. One standout example is the Tribal Talk Initiative.
  • During a field visit, I met many local leaders who shared how our training and resources empowered their community. This encounter showed the power of grassroots involvement.
  • I am pleased to announce that the Tribal Talk documentary will be screened at the World Urban Forum in October, showcasing some of these incredible stories.

Personal Reflection on Sustaining Momentum

  • As we celebrate our achievements, we must recognize that our work is not done.
  • To keep the momentum, we must continue investing in capacity-building, policy implementation, and partnerships.
  • Education, awareness, and innovation are key.
  • The sustainability of this project's achievements is crucial for future success.
  • Mainstreaming biodiversity into tourism is essential for sustainable development and environmental conservation.
  • By continuing to integrate biodiversity into tourism policies and practices, we can protect ecosystems, preserve natural landscapes, and support local livelihoods.
  • This will ensure that Egypt’s natural wonders remain resilient and accessible for future generations.
  • On behalf of UNDP, I congratulate and thank the Ministry of Environment, all partners, and donors. Your collaboration and commitment have made a significant impact.
  • Let’s continue this important work.

Thank you.
