SDG Integration

Enabling progress on the SDGs is at the core of our work on energy.

Our Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Integration work helps countries to tackle complex development challenges through integrated programming where energy access enables progress on multiple SDGs.

Our SDG Integration service offer focuses on, but is not limited to, supporting projects in critical nexus areas where energy is key: SDG 1 on poverty; SDG 3 on health; SDG 5 on gender; SDG 8 on decent work and economic growth; SDG 11 on sustainable cities and communities; SDG 13 on climate action. To do so, we prioritize projects that enable the productive uses of energy, which refers to the use of energy for activities than enhance income and welfare as a means unlock a wealth of development benefits.

SDG 1: No poverty

Because access to reliable, affordable energy is a powerful enabler of poverty alleviation and empowerment, scaling up our energy access work will be critical to eradicate poverty.

Good health is essential to sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda reflects the complexity and interconnectedness of the two. The lack of access to clean energy has significant and wide-ranging impacts on people’s health. Our energy programming includes a focus on enhancing health outcomes in low and middle-income countries.

SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities

More than half of us live in cities. By 2050, two-thirds of all humanity—6.5 billion people—will be urban. Sustainable development cannot be achieved without significantly transforming the way we build and manage our urban spaces. UNDP is working to provide to enable municipalities and countries to build greener cities and develop alternative low-carbon means of transportation.

SDG 13: Climate action

The way we produce and consume energy is the leading driver of the climate crisis: three-quarters of global greenhouse gas emissions come from our current fossil-fuel based energy sector. Transitioning out of fossil fuels and towards sustainable energy sources is the only way to stop the rise in global temperatures and its devastating effects on people and the wider natural world that we depend on. We work with countries to help them achieve a just energy transition and build the sustainable energy systems that will enable the achievement of the SDGs and of global climate goals.
