Enhancing Management Effectiveness of Georgia's Protected Areas

December 19, 2024

A set of publications provides a comprehensive analysis of the financial landscape for Georgia’s Protected Areas, highlighting existing gaps and potential funding opportunities.

The Finance Needs Assessment offers a detailed evaluation of current financing levels and the estimated financial requirements for both basic and optimal management of eight target Protected Areas in Georgia. The accompanying Finance Opportunity Analysis explores non-tourism income generation possibilities, identifying existing and innovative financial instruments.

The set includes a climate vulnerability report and climate change adaptation plans for the Kazbegi, Pshav-Khevsureti and Tusheti Protected Areas.

Additionally, the publications provide detailed concepts, action plans, and technical assessments for the introduction of entrance fees at Lagodekhi and Mtirala National Parks, as well as comprehensive implementation plans for Machakhela, Kintrishi, and Mtirala Protected Areas.

The set of publications introduces tools and methodologies for social and ecological effectiveness evaluations, promoting a holistic approach to conservation and outlines a national programme and action plan aimed at developing the skills and expertise necessary for the effective management of protected areas.

The publications were prepared under the joint UNDP/GEF/CNF initiative to strengthen the financial sustainability of Georgia’s 12 protected areas.
