On 29 June, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is holding a high-level dialogue on the Blue Economy in Bissau, in partnership with the government of Guinea-Bissau.

The event brings together international experts and key national actors and stakeholders across sectors such as government, public institutions, development partners, civil society, academia, and the private sector to participate and put forward views on how Guinea-Bissau can collectively embrace and capitalize on its Blue Economy and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) characteristics for economic transformation.

Guinea-Bissau is a SIDS with a rich, diverse marine and terrestrial ecosystem. Its waters are considered one of the wealthiest biodiversity areas of West Africa. Fisheries, maritime transport, and tourism present immense opportunities and are identified as key, to economic diversification, recovery and building resilience in the country.

The UNDP led Blue Economy event is a part of a broader UNDP initiative that seeks to strengthen efforts to tap into Guinea-Bissau's vast Blue Economy potentials and promote evidence-based interventions and solutions for policy and programming. This includes:

  • promoting Dialogue and Awareness;
  • supporting the development of a National Blue Economy Strategy;
  • developing Interventions aimed at strengthening existing and emerging Blue Economy sectors' value chains.
