UNDP Expands Access to Justice in Guinea-Bissau with "Mobile Justice" Initiative

June 6, 2024

Bissau, 03 May 2024 - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Ministry of Justice and UNICEF, announces the expansion of the "Candonga di Justiça" project, which aims to decentralise and improve access to justice services in remote areas of Guinea-Bissau. The initiative supported by the Swiss Confederation, which has had a significant impact since its launch in 2021, will run from 6 to 18 May 2024, covering the country's eastern, southern, northern and island regions, excluding the capital Bissau.

Context and Impact of Mobile Justice

Mobile Justice" was developed following a study carried out by the UNDP Acceleration Laboratory at the House of Justice in Gabu, which identified the need to facilitate access to justice services for remote communities. The data revealed that proximity to services significantly increases usage, especially among vulnerable groups. Through mobile units, the project provides not only access to judicial services, but also human rights education and gender sensitisation.

Objectives and Methodology

The main objective of "Mobile Justice" is to ensure that no citizen, regardless of their geographical location, is left without access to justice. This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially the goals of peace, justice and effective institutions. The project's methodology includes travelling to remote communities, carrying out birth registrations and trials, as well as awareness-raising and information sessions.

Partnerships and Support

This initiative is possible thanks to the financial support of the Swiss Confederation and the collaboration between the UNDP, the Ministry of Justice of Guinea-Bissau and UNICEF, who together are working to promote more inclusive and accessible governance. The involvement of grassroots organisations and community leaders has been key to the success and acceptance of the project in the target regions.
