Paving the way to Prevention, Resilience and Transformation

March 17, 2025

Guinea-Bissau stands at a critical juncture—a moment to transform, grow, and thrive. Home to diverse marine and terrestrial ecosystems, this West African nation of about 2 million people is rich in natural and cultural heritage. Its fertile lands, abundant fisheries, and captivating historical and cultural landmarks hold immense potential for sustainable growth, particularly in agriculture, fisheries, and tourism. However, Guinea-Bissau faces a unique blend of challenges and opportunities. While its coastal location supports a fisheries-driven economy, the lack of economic diversification leaves it heavily reliant on cashew nut exports. At the same time, two out of three citizens experience multidimensional poverty. Access to electricity is limited to just 40% of the population, and healthcare and education services remain inadequate for many. Guinea-Bissau is also on the front lines of climate change, grappling with rising sea levels, coastal erosion, flooding, and saltwater intrusion. These environmental threats jeopardize food security, livelihoods, and sustainable development. Despite these hurdles, there is a pathway to transformation. By harnessing its natural assets, fostering innovation, and working together, Guinea-Bissau can turn challenges into opportunities, paving the way for inclusive and sustainable development.
