A STRATEGIC APPROACH TO CLIMATE MOBILITY ADAPTATION AND RESILIENCE IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN
Latin America and the Caribbean are increasingly experiencing climate change-related shocks, including wildfires, storms, and floods, as well as long-term stresses like sea level rise and prolonged droughts. These extreme weather events and environmental changes are driving human mobility and displacement across the region.
To support adaptation and resilience, UNDP has developed three key policy documents aimed at strategically addressing climate mobility:
- Reviewing Climate-Related Human Mobility in NDCs and NAPs – Analyzing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Action Plans (NAPs) to strengthen climate adaptation and resilience strategies.
- Climate Mobility, Adaptation, and Resilience: Lessons from Colombia – Drawing insights from Colombia’s experience in addressing climate mobility.
- Mapping Climate Mobility Hotspot Risks – Proposing a framework to assess risks and develop responses to climate-induced displacement.
Key Findings:
- Climate mobility in the region is increasing, requiring innovative approaches to anticipate risks and responses.
- Many governments in Latin America and the Caribbean are incorporating human mobility considerations into their climate policies.
- Colombia’s evolving approach to climate mobility offers valuable lessons for the region.
These policy documents highlight opportunities to strengthen public awareness, improve risk diagnostics, and enhance adaptation strategies to support communities facing climate mobility challenges.
