GBF EAS

Global Biodiversity Framework Early Action Support

Supporting Guyana’s Commitment to Global Biodiversity Conservation

As a party to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Co-operative Republic of Guyana is taking significant strides to meet its commitments under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), also known as the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. With the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the Global Biodiversity Framework Early Action Support (GBF EAS) Project, Guyana is advancing its efforts to align national strategies and actions with global biodiversity goals.

The GBF EAS Project plays a crucial role in assisting developing and middle-income countries like Guyana in translating the ambitious targets of the CBD into actionable and impactful initiatives. By connecting policymakers, stakeholders, and biodiversity experts, the project fosters collaboration and innovation to achieve the GBF objectives and contribute meaningfully to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Key Focus Areas and Progress

Guyana’s engagement in the GBF EAS Project emphasises three critical components:

Component 1: Rapid Review of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP)
In this component, Guyana is conducting a thorough review of its NBSAP to ensure alignment with the Kunming-Montreal GBF. This process involves a comprehensive stakeholder consultation, which has been successfully completed, paving the way for an updated and effective national biodiversity strategy.

Component 2: Strengthening National Monitoring Systems
Recognising the importance of robust monitoring for informed decision-making, Guyana is assessing and developing plans to enhance its national biodiversity monitoring systems. Stakeholder consultations have been completed, ensuring the inclusion of diverse perspectives and expertise in designing systems that track progress and drive accountability.

Component 3: Biodiversity Finance Activities
Guyana focuses on identifying and implementing innovative financing mechanisms to sustain long-term biodiversity conservation. Efforts are underway to develop actionable plans that integrate biodiversity finance into national development frameworks, ensuring the availability of resources to achieve GBF targets

A Commitment to Global Biodiversity Goals

These ongoing efforts underscore Guyana’s dedication to safeguarding its rich biodiversity while contributing to global initiatives aimed at halting and reversing biodiversity loss. By aligning its NBSAP with the GBF, strengthening monitoring systems, and prioritising biodiversity finance, Guyana demonstrates its leadership in fostering a sustainable future for all.

As progress continues, the GBF EAS Project serves as a testament to the power of collaboration and prompt action in addressing the biodiversity crisis. Together with local and international partners, Guyana is setting an inspiring example of how nations can balance development with ecological stewardship for the benefit of present and future generations.
