Umbrella Programme to Support NBSAP Update and the 7th National Reports
Guyana is one of 69 countries participating in a Global Biodiversity Enabling Activity, which supports the updating of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to align with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). This programme helps countries like Guyana prepare their 7th National Report on biodiversity, ensuring that local biodiversity conservation efforts match the ambition of global targets. For Guyana, this project is an opportunity to integrate biodiversity into all sectors of policy and planning, identify harmful subsidies, and improve stakeholder participation—including Indigenous Peoples, local communities, women, and youth. It encourages a whole-of-society approach and promotes nature-based solutions in tackling biodiversity loss and climate change.
In Guyana’s context, biodiversity is deeply intertwined with indigenous culture, rural livelihoods, and national identity. The project will enable Guyana to conduct a gender-sensitive and participatory review of its biodiversity goals, focusing on key areas such as ecosystem restoration, sustainable land use, and the protection of species and habitats. Given the nation’s extensive forest cover and rich ecological zones, aligning NBSAPs with the GBF enhances Guyana’s role in global biodiversity conservation while unlocking technical and financial support. It also builds upon prior efforts like the Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN), helping to secure long-term funding and institutional capacity for biodiversity protection.
