Engagement Facility
Under the Engagement Facility, UNDP is strengthening Policy, legislative and institutional frameworks in Jamaica to effectively implement the Nagoya Protocol and to support the Government of Jamaica with ratifying the Nagoya Protocol.
The project aims to improve the capacities and strengthen the policy and legal framework associated with access to genetic resources. The project will further seek to enhance traditional knowledge associated with genetic resources and benefit-sharing derived from their utilization for the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
The project is in direct response to the decision at the Second meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ICNP-2) held in Delhi, July 2012, where the Conference of the Parties “Reiterates its invitation to the Global Environment Facility to provide financial support to Parties to assist with the early ratification of the Nagoya Protocol and its implementation.
NOTE:
Benefit-sharing obligations: Domestic-level benefit-sharing measures are to provide for the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources with the contracting party providing genetic resources. Utilization includes research and development on the genetic or biochemical composition of genetic resources, as well as subsequent applications and commercialization. Sharing is subject to mutually agreed terms. Benefits may be monetary or non-monetary such as royalties and the sharing of research results. MORE
