What is your educational background?

I hold a bachelor's degree in which I studied a combination of Economics and Law. Additionally, I completed a double master's degree in Public Policy at the United Nations University (UNU-MERIT) . This interdisciplinary program equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of policy analysis, governance, and international development, aligning well with the mission and values of the United Nations.

What made you apply to the JPO programme/what is your motivation to work with your UN agency?

As someone with a diverse background spanning from Afghanistan to Germany, I have aspired to work for the United Nations for many years. During my bachelor studies, I discovered my passion for International Law and Development, which fueled my desire to make a meaningful impact in these areas. After exploring numerous extracurricular activities at university and participating in my first Model UN, I realized this was the path I was meant to pursue. I strongly believe in the principles of multilateralism and I am committed to fostering international cooperation to address global challenges.

What are the main activities/tasks you are working on? What is a day at the office/in the field like?

I work in the Office of the Assistant Director General (ADG) within the IP and Innovation Ecosystems Sector,  which comprises over 160 employees. My role is akin to that of a Project and External Relations Manager, offering a diverse range of responsibilities and a high-level perspective on the organization. Our office serves as the face of the entire sector, that is providing programs and services to stakeholders in the IP and Innovation Ecosystems, amongst others including governments, businesses, and academia. Our ultimate goal is to support stakeholders in building their capacity to innovate. One of my significant contributions has been in the strategy development for our sector. This involved a year-long, bottom-up process resulting in an inclusive strategy paper, which is now being implemented through various working groups. Witnessing the implementation of our strategy and observing tangible improvements in collaboration and communication within our sector has been incredibly rewarding.

In addition, I track the Office’s External Relations. This includes accompanying our ADG to external meetings and following up on agreements. I am also involved in economic research topics, adding a layer of analytical depth to my role.

Each day in my role is unique, presenting new challenges and opportunities. This dynamic environment aligns well with my personality and strengths, keeping me motivated and engaged as I navigate the diverse tasks and responsibilities.

In your day-to-day work, what SDG(s) are you helping to implement?

In my day-to-day work, I primarily contribute to SDG 9, which focuses on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. By enhancing countries' capacity to innovate within complex innovation ecosystems, we drive sustainable industrialization and foster innovation. Additionally, our efforts intersect with several other SDGs, particularly SDG 5 on Gender Equality. This holistic approach allows us to contribute to a broad range of sustainable development objectives through our work.

What set of skills have you developed most throughout your assignment?

Before joining WIPO as a JPO, I gained experience in German development aid (GIZ) and as a management consultant in the private sector (KPMG). Now working for an International Organization, in such diverse contexts, has been enlightening. I've had the opportunity to immerse myself in a culturally diverse environment, adapting to different working styles and learning from colleagues representing a multitude of backgrounds. Moreover, I've been fortunate to observe and learn from colleagues who exemplify diplomacy and effective communication in international, often politically sensitive, environments. These skills are invaluable and have deepened my understanding of global dynamics. They are essential for navigating complex organizational landscapes and will undoubtedly benefit my future career endeavors.

What piece of advice would you give to those who are considering applying to the JPO Programme?

To those considering applying to the JPO Programme, I would wholeheartedly encourage you to seize the opportunity. Trust in your skills and abilities—sometimes the right opportunity aligns unexpectedly. For instance, I've seen individuals apply multiple times before being selected, highlighting the importance of persistence and determination.

Follow your passion, even if the journey initially seems challenging or uncertain. It's often the uncomfortable paths that lead to the most rewarding experiences and personal growth. Stay consistent in your pursuit and believe in your potential to contribute meaningfully.

What is the biggest motivator for you when it comes to your work?

The greatest motivation for me is the profound impact of my work as a civil servant, which touches the lives of people worldwide. For example, WIPO member states have approved a groundbreaking Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources, and Associated Traditional Knowledge after decades of negotiations. This historic treaty mandates patent applicants to disclose the origin of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge used in their inventions. It marks the first WIPO treaty to specifically address Indigenous Peoples and local communities' rights in intellectual property, promoting inclusivity and sustainability in global innovation frameworks. I consider it a privilege to serve 193 countries and to have the opportunity, through both large-scale initiatives and everyday actions, to contribute to a better global system. Often, this involves embodying the change I wish to see, challenging both individuals and processes to foster greater efficiency and justice. Knowing that my efforts contribute to positive change on such a significant scale drives my dedication and passion for my work.

My JPO experience has been a transformative journey of learning and growth, where I've had the privilege to contribute meaningfully to global initiatives in a diverse and dynamic environment at WIPO
