What is your educational background?

I have a bachelor’s degree in law, then pursued a Master’s in Public Administration and Policy Studies, followed by postgraduate studies in Humanitarian Operations.

What made you apply to the JPO programme/what is your motivation to work with your UN agency?

Having gained experience and skills with prominent INGOs, I have always been motivated to work at the UN to contribute to a global cause in today’s dynamic environment and to challenge my skills on an international scale. I first learned about the JPO program through my former supervisor, who encouraged me to apply. Afterward, I conducted my research on the program and was drawn to its excellent learning and development opportunities. I also valued the chance to work with a diverse team, learn about different perspectives, and gain global exposure. In this regard, UNDP offered me unparalleled opportunities to understand the outlook of global development with an excellent professional space to grow, making it a great place to start a career in an international organization.

What are the main activities/tasks you are working on? What is a day at the office/in the field like?

Guided by the Senior Strategic Advisor, I contribute to the effective implementation of programs for the conflict-affected population in Yemen, focusing on coordination, policy advice, and partnership aspects.

As a colleague in a strategic location, i.e. UNDP Yemen Amman Liaison Office, I support various donor-focused coordination platforms and technical working groups as required by the country office.

In this role, externally, I actively engage with colleagues in various partner organizations and donor groups, and internally, primarily collaborating with technical leads in our main thematic areas: Governance and Peacebuilding; Climate Change, Water, Energy, and Environment; and Green Economic Recovery and Development.

In your day-to-day work, what SDG(s) are you helping to implement?

Most SDGs, if not all, are interconnected, and each success or failure affects the overall achievement of the other goals. That being said, due to the nature of my position and daily activities, I primarily contribute to SDG 16 & 17. However, I am also contributing in various ways to SDGs 6, 7, 8, 14, and 16, although the scale of my contribution varies.

What is the most challenging project that you have worked on/are working on?

Although my role mainly focuses on the overall implementation of programs, particularly in coordination and external engagement, I always remind myself that it is crucial to maintain sensitivity and an evolving understanding of the context as the UNDP Yemen Country Office is unique due to the complex socio-economic and political dynamics affecting its operational environment.

What has been the most rewarding experience to date for you at your duty station? (work and/or non-work related)

Beyond my primary focus on professional development, the most rewarding experiences have been the regular support and encouragement from my inspirational supervisor to learn and gain high-level exposure, being part of an amazing team, and the excellent working relationships I share with my colleagues throughout the organization. Additionally, the relationships I have built both internally and externally have been invaluable. These experiences have deepened my appreciation for working in a multicultural and diverse environment and reminded me of the privilege of being part of an organization rich in diversity, knowledge, and experience.

What set of skills have you developed most throughout your assignment?

I have strengthened my skills in intercultural communication, emotional intelligence, and impactful communication. My role in program implementation, particularly in coordination and external engagement, has highlighted the importance of sensitivity to the uniqueness of the operational context. These skills have been essential for effectively engaging with diverse stakeholders and fostering successful collaborations

What piece of advice would you give to those who are considering applying to the JPO Programme?

If you aspire to work in an international organization, are eager to learn from a diverse range of global expertise, and wish to contribute positively to a global common cause, then look no further than this program. It is highly rewarding both professionally and personally.

How do you feel your JPO assignment will influence your career choices/opportunities within the UN?

I understand that working for the UN comes with a significant amount of responsibility. The skills and knowledge I am developing, especially in a complex and ever-changing operational context, will prepare me for future opportunities and challenges. Having a foothold in the system will allow me to pursue opportunities due to my organizational knowledge, operational understanding, and sectoral expertise, and, most importantly, it would align my expectations vis-à-vis the strategic directions of the UN.

It has been an exciting journey filled with opportunities to learn, contribute, and excel on a global scale. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the Government of the Netherlands for fully funding my journey in the program.
