Context:

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) join forces every year on December 9 to commemorate the International Anti-Corruption Day through a global campaign. The Day, which was designated by the UN General Assembly in 2003, provides an annual opportunity to recall the adoption of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) and the importance of its effective implementation; and to raise awareness and promote action against corruption towards the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 

This year in Lebanon, UNDP is collaborating with LibanPost, universities and civil society organizations to commemorate the International Anti-Corruption Day, with a special emphasis on the role of the youth. Planned activities include:

1. A competition for talented youth between the age of 15-29 years to design a postage stamp through which they could visualize and communicate their thoughts and feelings on the state of corruption in Lebanon, its impact on their lives and the importance of tackling it for a better future.

2. Field activities across Lebanon to enable youth engagement in advocating for and monitoring the implementation of anti-corruption reforms and actions, including the country’s first national anti-corruption strategy(2020-2025), which had been adopted in May 2020.

The commemorative event on December 12 will build on the competition and the field activities. It will be attended by representatives of the youth groups that have taken part in the campaign, as well as concerned public officials and representatives from civil society and the business community.

TOPICS OF DISCUSSION

The event will feature presentations by youth delegates, followed by discussions with participating officials responsible for the implementation of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy on the progress achieved, lessons learned and the way forward. It will also witness the announcement of the top ten designed postage stamps, including the winner whose design will be produced in the form of an official postage stamp.

FORMAT

The event will take place in a hybrid format, it will be live streamed over Zoom on Saturday 12 December, 2020 from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. Beirut time (GMT+2) and is now open for registration.

It will also be live streamed on the UNDP’s Facebook channel.
