Like others, the city of Saida has long been affected by Lebanon’s ongoing electricity crisis, with daily power outages disrupting businesses, impacting public safety, and limiting social and economic activity after sunset. While many have resorted to costly private generators for some time, this solution remains untenable for the scale of needs at municipality level as it leaves large areas in darkness.

Through the efforts of UNDP and funding from the German Government through KfW Development Bank, Saida’s streets are now equipped with solar-powered LED lighting systems.
Key locations benefiting from this development include the entrance of the old souk, the Stadium area, and the Corniche. Alongside installation, essential maintenance measures have been put in place to ensure long-term sustainability.

Residents have welcomed the change. Lina Samara, a frequent visitor to Saida, shared: “I used to leave before sunset, but now I feel safe staying out and enjoying my evenings. The city’s atmosphere has completely transformed.”

Municipal Police Officer Mohamed Al-Gharbi highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating: “This project has greatly improved life in Saida. The community’s appreciation is evident, as more people are now engaging with the city and its public spaces.”

"Ali Hamade, a displaced resident from the border town of Kfar Kila, finds solace in the Stadium Area in Saida. He has built new friendships and enjoys daily walks there. 'If it weren’t for this space, the weight of displacement would have been much heavier,' he shares."
By enhancing safety, revitalizing public spaces, and supporting economic activity, this initiative is promoting a more dynamic urban environment. With improved infrastructure, Saida can live more fully and thrive and - day and night.
