Sophie Kemkhadze joins as the new Resident Representative in Libya

Tripoli, 25/August/2024 – Dr. Sophie Kemkhadze has joined the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Libya as the new Resident Representative. Dr. Kemkhadze takes up the role after serving for two years as UNDP’s Deputy Resident Representative in Somalia.

As the new Resident Representative, Dr. Kemkhadze will lead UNDP’s overall initiatives in Libya, focusing on strengthening Libya’s democratic governance and the rule of law institutions, enhancing the resilience and livelihoods of people affected by conflict, displacement, and climate change, and laying the foundations for Libya’s transition towards green and inclusive growth, and economic diversification.

Together, we can make a meaningful impact and help build a brighter future for all people in Libya,” said Dr. Kemkhadze.

Dr. Sophie Kemkhadze brings over 25 years of experience in leadership and technical advisory roles, including 17 years with UNDP. She began her career in Georgia and has since served with UNDP in countries including Armenia, Nepal, Indonesia and Somalia.

A citizen of Georgia, Dr. Kemkhadze holds a PhD in Mathematics from the Georgian Academy of Science and a Master’s in Economics and Policy from Warwick University, UK.
