June 18, 2024
Mangochi, Malawi, June 11, 2024 — The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Malawi have successfully launched a comprehensive Digital Readiness Assessment, a vital initiative aimed at bolstering the country’s digital public infrastructure, enhancing digital skills, and fostering robust digital governance.
The launch workshop, held in Mangochi, brought together a diverse array of stakeholders including representatives from the private sector, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academia, and civil society. This inclusive approach underscores the collective effort required to drive Malawi’s digital transformation.
The Digital Readiness Assessment is part of UNDP’s broader commitment to support countries in navigating the digital era. By evaluating Malawi’s current digital landscape, the assessment will provide critical insights and actionable recommendations to guide the development of policies and strategies that promote sustainable and inclusive digital growth.
Baldwin Chyamwaka, Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Digitalisation, highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, “The Digital Readiness Assessment is a crucial step towards realizing our vision of a digitally inclusive Malawi. It will help us identify the gaps and opportunities in our digital infrastructure and skills development, ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital age.”
Paul Katema, Director of E-Government, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving digital transformation. “This workshop exemplifies the power of multi-stakeholder engagement. By bringing together experts from various sectors, we are laying a strong foundation for a digital future that benefits all Malawians,” he said.
Fenella Frost, UNDP Resident Representative, expressed UNDP’s commitment to supporting Malawi’s digital journey. “Digital transformation is not just about technology; it’s about people. At UNDP, we are dedicated to empowering nations like Malawi to harness the potential of digital tools to improve governance, enhance public services, and drive sustainable development. This assessment is a pivotal step in that direction,” she noted.
The workshop facilitated dynamic discussions and collaborative activities aimed at identifying key priorities and strategies for enhancing Malawi’s digital ecosystem. Participants shared insights on best practices, explored innovative solutions, and discussed the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders in driving digital progress.
As Malawi continues to advance in its digital transformation journey, the outcomes of the Digital Readiness Assessment will serve as a critical resource for policymakers, industry leaders, and development partners. The insights gained will guide the formulation of strategic initiatives to build resilient digital infrastructure, enhance digital literacy, and promote inclusive digital governance.
