11 December 2024, Kuala Lumpur: Efforts to measure Malaysia’s current progress toward achieving the SDG’s have today been launched by the Ministry of Economy under the third Voluntary National Review (VNR).

Led by the National SDG Centre (Pusat SDG Negara) in partnership with the United Nations, the VNR assesses national progress made in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Today’s kick off session is the start of an extensive national consultation process with participants considering, among other issues, the VNR’s final scope, current and emerging development challenges and the enablers needed to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs.

An inclusive whole-of-nation, and multi-stakeholder approach is central to the VNR process, expounding on the successes, challenges, and lessons learned to further accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. As the World moves towards 2030 and begins discussion on a post-SDG world, it is crucial to leverage progress toward the SDGs for government planning processes and policy discussions. This will further Government’s commitment to ensure that no one is left behind.

Since 2015, Malaysia has presented the VNR twice to the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). The first in 2017 and the second, in 2021. The third VNR will be presented to the HLPF in July 2025. This review will evaluate SDG performance against indicator targets, examine the means of implementation within Malaysia’s context, and identify barriers to address these challenges as Malaysia pushes toward High Income Status.

This multi-stakeholder kick-off consultation will engage with a broad range of stakeholders among them, national and sub-national governments, development partners, civil society and the private sector.
