The uptake rate of COVID-19 vaccine among Orang Asli communities in Peninsular Malaysia is currently suboptimal if the intention is to achieve herd immunity. Findings from a UNDP survey showed that women and the elderly (60 years old and above) are more likely to hesitate getting vaccinated. The survey also found locational differences, Orang Asli living in areas closer to urban areas are more likely to get vaccinated or want to get vaccinated compared to those living in interior, rural areas. The main reason for vaccine hesitancy is the concern regarding potential longer-term side effects. Segmented messages and strategies can be introduced to accelerate vaccination coverage amongst Orang Asli communities.
