
The Third Edition of ‘Viyavathi Raajje’ Conference focused on the Southern Atolls of Maldives, Kicks off in Laamu Atoll
‘Viavathi Raajje’ is a conference series hosted by Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to strengthen the decentralization system by engaging in dialogue and discussion with councils and reviewing the existing structures and finding areas to improve upon to ensure good governance.
In addition to the councils, the conference was attended by state ministers, Parliament members of the southern atolls, policy executives from the President’s Office, and technical experts from various institutions including state-owned enterprises.
The two-day conference featured four sessions with presentations and discussions on four main thematic discussions:
1. Gender Equality
2. Land Use Plan development
3. Resources and budget management
4. Climate change and resilience building

Speaking at the conference UNDP Maldives Resident Representative, Enrico Gaveglia said,
"Now is the time to build up expertise and capabilities to influence and align private capital to Maldives’ social and environmental agenda. UNDP is here to help with a finance taxonomy and a suite of SDG-ready projects to blend public finance to capital."

During Viyavathi Conference, President Solih also launched the Handbooks for Councilors and WDCs by the Local Government Authority (LGA). The handbooks are information-rich and practical tools to support and achieve the vision for community and island development and were supported by UK in Maldives and UNDP Maldives.
Enrico Gaveglia also reaffirmed UNDP Maldives’ commitment to remain with our partners the President’s Office and LGA, to drive progress on Maldives’ decentralization agenda.
