Project for Developing Sustainable Agricultural Economy (PDSAE) to increase food security
The project builds on the foundations laid by the SEEDS project and aims to further enhance local agricultural productivity in the Maldives. Given the country’s limited arable land and high dependence on imports, the project focuses on strengthening food security and creating economic opportunities within the agriculture sector. It also seeks to encourage the entry of entrepreneurs into agriculture and facilitate secondary and tertiary industries such as food processing and textiles.
The project’s strategic direction includes:
- Enhancing local farmer expertise and increasing agricultural knowledge through capacity building.
- Mainstreaming and promoting Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) on farms under contract with AgroNat.
- Establishing key infrastructure, including a soil testing and plant tissue culture laboratory, and a training facility in Laamu Atoll.
- Scaling up the urban agricultural incubation programme for young and aspiring farmers in Greater Malé.
- Developing an organic market plaza to support and promote urban farming produce.
- Promoting greener farming technologies and innovative agricultural methods.
- Supporting agro-businesses through enhanced value-added services, BCC (business development) support, and a dedicated incubation plan focused on "From Farm to Plate."
Establishing a low-carbon transport mechanism for timely and sustainable movement of produce from farms to market.
