2. Spurring a Revolution
In the 1970s, the Maldives faced a fish crisis that highlighted the need for modernization in its fishing industry. In response, UNDP launched a project to introduce motorboats and train fishermen, leading to the country’s first diesel-powered fishing boat 'Ummeedhu,' which brought prosperity for local fishing communities, and revolutionized the country’s fishing industry. Today, the Maldives leads sustainable practices, with UNDP supporting initiatives like electric minibuses and the solar-powered 'Agri-boat' to cut post-harvest losses and emissions.
