What do you do?

I am a technology manager, over 18+ years of experience working in the technology field. As the Deputy Manager of Information Systems, I am responsible for leading a software development team that builds innovative insuretech solutions. My role includes devising procedures and strategies, guiding systems design and implementation, and fostering a collaborative culture that drives results.

As the Co-Founder of the Women in Tech Maldives, I am involved in shaping the vision and direction of the organization, working closely with the co-founder, board and key stakeholders to develop and execute strategies that promote gender diversity and inclusivity in the technology industry. I oversee the implementation of programs and initiatives that support women in tech, build partnerships and facilitate development programmes.

Tell us about your work with UNDP Maldives?

I participated in the UNDP Miyaheli innovation camp and presented my team's idea of "Girls to Code '', aimed at increasing girls' participation in technology. This was my first initiative, advocating for the importance of gender diversity in the technology sector. I have contributed to the Girls in STEM program, an UNDP Maldives initiative facilitated by Womenintechmv. Through this program, helped connect girls with role models and provided career guidance sessions throughout the Maldives.

What motivates you to work in this area (digital, tech, data, etc., innovation etc.)

I am motivated by the opportunity technology gives to create positive change, drive innovation and shape the future. It is a powerful tool for making a significant impact in the world and improving people’s lives.

What challenges do you face as a woman in this sector?

Throughout my career in the technology sector, I have had the privilege of working with supportive and inclusive teams, which has allowed me to take on a leadership role. However, I recognize that many women face significant challenges in this field. One common challenge is the persistent stereotype that women are less technically skilled, which can result in a lack of respect and opportunities for advancement. Additionally, the underrepresentation of women in technology can lead to services and products that do not consider women's perspectives, limiting their potential impact. Furthermore, there is often limited support and policies in place to encourage women to pursue careers in technology, which can make it harder for women to break into the field and advance their careers. Despite these challenges, I remain committed to promoting gender equality in technology and creating a more inclusive and diverse industry.

What would you like to say to the other women aspiring people out there?

Believe in your abilities and enjoy solving complex problems. Finding a supportive network and mentor can help you navigate the challenges and reach your full potential. Let us not forget our contribution to community development and let us strive to empower and uplift other women pursuing careers in technology, as we work together to break down barriers and pave the way for a more diverse and inclusive industry.
