This initiative not only empowers Indian Ocean SIDS entrepreneurs but also underscores UNDP's commitment to advancing gender-responsive trade policies.
UNDP backs SME participation from Mauritius, Rodrigues, and Seychelles in AWIEF 2024
November 28, 2024
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Multi-Country Office for Mauritius, Rodrigues, and Seychelles has facilitated the participation of 13 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) at the 10th Africa Women Innovation & Entrepreneurship Forum (AWIEF) in Cape Town, scheduled for November 28-29, 2024. This initiative has provided SMEs from these Indian Ocean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) with the opportunity to explore significant business prospects within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
AWIEF is dedicated to empowering women entrepreneurs across the continent. The 2024 edition set a new benchmark by uniting a record number of key stakeholders within the African entrepreneurial ecosystem to engage in impactful dialogue under the theme "Future For All: Collaborate For Growth. Solve Inequity. Act on Climate." The Forum featured high-level discussions focused on identifying actionable strategies that promote inclusive, equitable, and climate-smart growth throughout Africa. Panel discussions explored various vital themes, including the pivotal role of the AfCFTA in shaping a new course for the continent. Additionally, a multifaceted Trade Fair was organised to offer SMEs and particularly women-led businesses the opportunity to showcase the innovative products and services, providing them with valuable exposure and networking opportunities.
Leveraging the AfCFTA to Expand Business Linkages
For this 10th AWIEF edition, the UNDP multi-country office for Mauritius and Seychelles selected six SMEs from Mauritius and four from Seychelles, all of whom had previously participated in the Xport Accelerator Programme in collaboration with the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI). This training programme successfully equipped participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in international markets, thereby enhancing their competitiveness and sustainability. Three SME-owners from Rodrigues, who had previously attended the Export Readiness Programme organized by the Economic Development Board (EDB) in August 2024, were also selected to participate in the 2024 AWIEF event.
This initiative not only empowers women entrepreneurs but also underscores UNDP's commitment to advancing gender-responsive trade policies. The outcomes of AWIEF will align seamlessly with UNDP’s broader efforts under the AfCFTA framework, emphasizing women's economic empowerment. The insights gained and partnerships forged during AWIEF could significantly influence the trajectory of women entrepreneurs, enhancing their visibility and impact within the global marketplace.
