Ulaanbaatar, 15 January 2025 – The Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Communications, and UNDP in Mongolia jointly kicked off the AI Landscape Assessment initiative in Mongolia. The kick-off workshop convened representatives from ministries and other public institutions to exchange information, share perspectives, and encourage their active participation in the assessment process.

The partners will employ UNDP's "Artificial Intelligence Landscape Assessment (AILA)," a comprehensive framework that evaluates AI readiness across key dimensions, including "Government as Enabler," "Government as User," and "AI Ethics," to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Through a combination of desk research, public data, surveys, workshops, and in-house analysis, the assessment will deliver detailed reports, tailored insights, and actionable recommendations to enhance AI readiness in Mongolia.

“In 2024, Mongolia advanced 11 positions in the Government AI Readiness Index, ranking 98th out of 188 countries. This progress reflects our commitment to strengthening AI and fostering readiness for its responsible implementation. This AI Landscape Assessment is a critical step towards gaining a deeper understanding, identifying gaps, and driving targeted actions to enhance AI-driven innovation and sustainable development” noted Mr. Altan-Od Pushaa, Acting State Secretary of the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation, and Communications.

UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Mongolia Ms. Lin Cao stated, “This assessment is more than a report—it is a roadmap. It will help us to identify the key factors that will enable Mongolia to harness AI for sustainable and inclusive development. I am confident that the diverse expertise shared in this workshop will enrich our discussions and help us develop strategies to ensure AI is used in ways that are ethical, inclusive, and beneficial for all of Mongolia’s citizens.”

The workshop included presentations on the key methodology and its significance to representatives from ministries and relevant agencies. It highlighted opportunities for using AI in government policies and services, discussed the current state and potential risks, and concluded with the collection of essential data and an exploration of future collaboration opportunities. The AI Landscape Assessment in Mongolia is supported by UNDP’s Chief Digital Office and Inclusive Growth Team in the Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific.
