The Ministry of Environment and Tourism and UNDP Mongolia Sign Memorandum of Understanding
December 27, 2023
Ulaanbaatar, 27 December 2023 – Today, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Mongolia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further expand their partnership for the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contribution of Mongolia.
The MoU underscores the two organizations’ commitment to a series of environmental and social initiatives, aimed at mitigating air pollution, promoting renewable energy consumption, and enhancing the capacity for climate change adaptation in Mongolia.
A key initiative within this collaboration is aimed at the development of a National Carbon Market Framework and corresponding regulations, aimed at promoting sustainable practices and green development.
The establishment of a framework for the National Carbon Market in Mongolia will be a significant step towards mitigating climate change and promoting sustainable development. It would enable the country to efficiently manage its carbon emissions, encouraging industries to adopt greener technologies and practices, while also potentially generating economic benefits for the people and businesses through the trade of carbon credits.
The MoU is an integral part of UNDP’s intervention to promote change for adopting energy efficiency and contributing to low-carbon energy transition, as well as empowering women and communities to have access to clean heating and cooking energy in ger districts of Mongolia.
During the signing ceremony, His Excellency Bat-Erdene Bat-Ulzii, the Minister of Environment and Tourism, emphasized the importance of the framework, stating “This framework is critical in establishing a structured market for carbon credits, which serves as a powerful incentive for both businesses and individuals to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. It is a cornerstone in fostering a greener economy and significantly advances Mongolia's progression towards a resilient, low-carbon future.”
Ms. Matilda Dimovska, UNDP Resident Representative in Mongolia, underlined the importance of the collaboration, and stated, “By expanding our partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, we are not only looking to address critical environmental challenges but also prioritizing the empowerment of vulnerable communities, particularly women. I am confident that our joint efforts towards establishing Mongolia’s Carbon Market will contribute to a more sustainable development of Mongolia, for all.”
