The Constitution of the Republic of Mozambique translated into two local languages - Cisena and Cinyanja languages, was officially launched this Monday, in a solemn act that took place at Constitutional Council. The act coincided with the celebration of the International Mother Language Day, commemorated by the UN every year on 21st February.

The translation of the Mozambican State Fundamental Law in these two languages, spoken in the provinces of Niassa, Tete, Zambezia, Manica and Sofala, is the result of a partnership between the Constitutional Council, UNDP Electoral Project – SEAM, and SEKELEKANI, a local Human Rights grass roots organization. According to the 2017 census, these two languages are spoken by 15% (3.36 million) of the total population in the country.

Constitution Council Presiding Judge of the, HE Dr. Lúcia da Luz Ribeiro, H.E. Dr. Adelino Muchanga, Minister of Justice H.E. Dr. Helena Kida, SEKELEKANI Chairperson, Mr. Jamisse Taimo, and the UNDP Resident Representative Ms. Narjess Saidane attended the launch of the Constitution in local languages.
