Dhangadhi, located in the westernmost part of Nepal, faces intense summer heat and frequent heatwaves due to its unique geography and skewed development. Almost every year, the maximum temperature of Dhangadhi exceeds 40°C. The highest daily temperature of 46.4℃ was recorded in Dhangadhi on 16 June 1995. The temperature reached 43.3℃ in May 2024.

The heatwave impacts in Dhangadhi disproportionately affect marginalized groups, including those with low socio-economic status, individuals living in houses with galvanized sheet roofs, and daily wage workers like auto drivers, construction laborers, and street vendors.

These extreme heat conditions have led to a rise in hospital admissions for heat-related illnesses such as headaches, diarrhea, nausea, and exacerbations of chronic health conditions like kidney, heart, and respiratory diseases. Heatwaves also contribute to foodborne and waterborne diseases.

In collaboration with global, national, and local partners, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nepal is taking action to help the city of Dhangadhi tackle the growing threat of extreme heat. Together, we'll work with local authorities and communities to develop and implement innovative heatwave solutions, focusing on protecting and empowering the most vulnerable – children, elderly, and women.

In collaboration with the government and partners, UNDP Nepal is determined to support Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City in managing heatwaves. UNDP is implementing several projects, including those related to urban/earthquake disaster preparedness and management, provincial and local governance support, biodiversity financing, and access to justice in Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City.

As a key administrative, commercial, and educational hub of Sudurpaschim Province of Nepal, Dhangadhi is a city full of potential. With its strong network of community organizations, local industries, and business leaders, it is the perfect place to make a real impact.

With your support, we can take these efforts to the next level and help Dhangadhi beat the heat!
