The UN Development Programme, Pokhara Metropolitan City and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) have collaborated to create green jobs through recycling and upcycling in Pokhara. With funding of USD 5,800,000 from KOICA and USD 870,000 from UNDP, the project entitled “Green Job Creation through Recycling and Upcycling in Pokhara (GCRU)” will be operated until December 2029.

The project aims to transform Pokhara's waste management landscape by fostering a vibrant green and circular economy. By promoting recycling and upcycling (RU) enterprises, this project aims to  create 680 green jobs and establish 30 RU enterprises generating an additional 300 employment opportunities.

During the inauguration of the project, Mayor Dhana Raj Acharya of Pokhara Metropolitan City expressed his gratitude and highlighted that the Green Venture Zone (GVZ) constructed under the project is expected to attract 105,000 visitors strengthening recycling and upcycling enterprises and contributing in tourism development.

Highlighting the global significance of environment sustainability and green jobs,  Country Director of KOICA, Mooheon Kong, emphasized on recycling and upcycling as powerful tools for creating green jobs that benefit both the environment and economic growth. Mr. Kong highlighted that he has envisioned the GVZ as a hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, and investment in sustainable practices.

Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP Nepal, Julien Chevillard, underscored the project’s potential to introduce a pioneering approach in Nepal by promoting recycling and upcycling enterprises. He emphasized on the importance of effective waste management for maintaining Pokhara's beauty and its reputation as a tourist hub, stating that the partnership between PMC, UNDP, and KOICA is crucial for implementing best practices in this field.

The Pokhara Metropolitan City has provided invaluable support by allocating land for the construction of the Green Venture Zone (GVZ) for the project. This zone will serve as a cornerstone for incentivizing existing and potential RU enterprises, while also raising environmental, social, and economic awareness about recycling and upcycling. This innovative space will also offer visitors the opportunity to observe, learn, and actively engage in sustainable practices that promote a circular economy, fostering new lifestyle choices and creative solutions to everyday waste challenges. Furthermore, 8,160 households in selected communities will receive waste management training, 1,710 individuals will benefit from educational programs, 1,360 people will receive entrepreneurship and skills training related to RU, and 136 RU groups will be equipped with the necessary tools and technology.
