Kathmandu, 31 December 2024 – UNDP Nepal and NMB Bank have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance sustainable financing, marking a significant milestone in Nepal’s development journey.

The MoU aims at creating an enabling environment for the private sector to issue thematic bonds. This initiative underscores UNDP's unwavering commitment to fostering innovative financial mechanisms that not only address climate challenges but also promote economic resilience—particularly as Nepal prepares for its graduation from the Least Developed Country status in 2026.

“This partnership symbolizes our shared commitment to advancing sustainable financing solutions that drive climate action and economic resilience,” said Ms. Kyoko Yokosuka, Resident Representative of UNDP Nepal. “In light of Nepal’s significant financing gap to meet the 2030 targets, this partnership marks a major milestone, helping to mobilize private financing in support of the sustainable development agenda.”

Furthermore, the MoU sets the stage for a mutual learning platform between UNDP Nepal and NMB Bank, ensuring that both parties can exchange vital knowledge and expertise in order to successfully facilitate the issuance of thematic bonds. This collaboration will strengthen Nepal’s green finance framework and establish a benchmark for future green initiatives both within the country and in the wider region.

As Mr. Sunil KC, Chief Executive Officer of NMB Bank, noted, “This partnership represents a significant step toward transforming Nepal’s financial landscape. The thematic bond will mobilize much-needed green investments, positioning Nepal as a leader in sustainable financing in the region.”

This collaboration underscores the critical role of public-private partnerships in achieving Nepal’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aligns with the global commitment to the Paris Agreement.
