Abuja – 12th February 2025 – As part of the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s export-ready workforce and boost the country’s competitiveness in the global fashion and leather goods industry, 94 out of 100 young trainees have successfully completed and passed the "Look and Learn" bag-making training programme programme designed to support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in meeting both local and international order demands.

Launched in October 2024, this three-month intensive training was implemented in collaboration with LeLook Bags Academy to equip entrepreneurs with the skills to succeed in the creative economy. The initiative provided participants with advanced bag-making techniques that adhere with international standards enabling them to compete globally. Targeting young Nigerians, the program aimed to develop a skilled workforce capable of supporting MSMEs in meeting increasing local and international order demands. In addition to technical training, participants received guidance on market access, pricing strategies, and business development, empowering them with the entrepreneurial skills to start their own businesses or secure employment with established MSMEs.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony, Ms. Elsie G. Attafuah, the UNDP Nigeria Resident Representative stated that, “Empowering young people with the right skills is critical to unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential under AfCFTA. This programme has not only equipped participants with technical expertise, but is fostering an inclusive and skilled workforce, we are strengthening Nigeria’s position in regional trade and driving sustainable economic growth.”

This programme directly supports Nigeria’s integration into the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by increasing production capacity, enhancing product quality, and creating a sustainable workforce for scaling cross-border trade. With AfCFTA providing a single market of 1.3 billion people, this initiative ensures that Nigeria’s fashion and leather industry can meet regional and global demand, boosting exports and foreign exchange earnings.

Chief Mrs. Chinwe Ezenwa, Managing Director and CEO of LeLook Bag Academy giving her remarks during the ceremony mention that, “Beyond trade benefits, the training programme was designed to promote inclusivity and economic empowerment. It deliberately mainstreamed gender equality, with strong representation from women and youth, and ensured participation from Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). This focus on inclusivity aligns with broader efforts to create sustainable livelihoods, reduce unemployment, and drive equitable economic growth.”

Speaking on the training experience, Ms. Akogwu Lucy Oyife said, "This training has been life-changing for me. Before now, I struggled to find opportunities, but through this programme, I’ve gained the skills and confidence to start my own bag-making business. I now have the knowledge to produce high-quality bags that meet export standards, and I’m excited about the possibilities ahead."

With practical skills, industry knowledge, and market linkages, these newly trained artisans are now equipped to earn a sustainable income, contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s MSME sector, and enhance the country's reputation as a hub for high-quality, export-ready products. As these skilled artisans enter the workforce, they will play a critical role in scaling production, expanding trade, and strengthening Nigeria’s footprint in AfCFTA’s single market.
