In Nigeria, young individuals are embarking on a transformative journey through the Nigeria Jubilee Fellowship Programme (NJFP). Among them is Bukar Dikwama, from Borno State, who is passionate about agriculture.

Bukar's journey began when he was selected for the programme and matched with a host organisation in Maiduguri. This organisation called Swift Hub, operates diverse units ranging from ICT to construction and agriculture. Bukar joined the agriculture department, a field he describes with so much passion. "Here, we practice modern agriculture. Currently, we are cultivating maize using a drip irrigation system along Magumeri Road. We start our seedlings in a greenhouse and then transplant them to the field between 21 to 25 days after planting," Bukar explains.

This hands-on experience in advanced farming techniques marked a significant shift for Bukar. It was more than just training—it was an opportunity to learn about agricultural reforms. "I have always believed that agriculture holds the key to Nigeria's future," he says, "But to unlock agriculture’s full potential in Nigeria, we must embrace modern methods."

Under the guidance of the head of his department, Bukar explored diverse types of sustainable farming such as mastering irrigation timing, precise fertilizer application, and the nurturing of plants from greenhouse to field. Each day in this role brought new challenges and victories while building his skills and confidence.

The highlight of Bukar's experience was the direct interaction with local farmers. Equipped with his newfound knowledge, he went into rural areas where he shared innovative techniques with the community. The impact of his work was visible in the farmers' grateful expressions—an image Bukar holds dear. "The gratitude in their eyes was unforgettable. Knowing that I was enhancing their livelihoods was incredibly rewarding," he recalls emotionally.

As his one-year fellowship with NJFP ended, Bukar returned to his community, not just as a trained individual, but as someone ready to practice sustainable farming initiatives. He wasted no time in applying the skills and insights he had gained. Looking to the future, Bukar foresees a thriving agricultural sector where every farmer is equipped with the necessary resources and knowledge to succeed. The Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme has not only equipped Bukar and his peers with invaluable skills but also lit a passion for agricultural practices that promises to catalyze positive change for years to come.

The Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme (NJFP) is a youth empowerment partnership initiative between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and co-funded by the European Union. The programme seeks to match and onboard Fellows in host organisation's that have their expertise while equipping them with world-class practical knowledge and relevant skills.
