SDGs Annual Progress Report 2017
May 7, 2018
Since May 2016, UNDP has supported the MoEc in nationalizing the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda based on the country’s priorities as well as in setting up national level coordination structures; this process will eventually lead to the issuance of nationalized SDGs’ targets and indicators (the “A-SDGs”). The project has also assisted in aligning the A-SDGs with the national development strategies, planning, and budgeting process to ensure that the progress along the development plans will denote progress on the SDGs.
In 2017, the emphasis has been put on these aspects: nationalizing the SDGs and adjusting these to Afghanistan’s specificities; nonetheless, the need for a global approach has not been disregarded and consultations have been extended to all stakeholders engaged in the process of nationalizing the SDGs targets and indicators. The consultative and inclusive approach has been facilitated by the establishment of a national high-level coordination platform on SDGs - the Executive Committee on SDGs, technically supported by UNDP. The first meeting of the Executive Committee on SDGs was held on 8 July 2017, under the chairmanship of H.E. Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and co-chairmanship of UNDP’s Country Director, representing the UN family. During this reporting period, and in the framework of the technical working groups, the
Ministry of Economy pursued its consultation with line ministries and government agencies on finalizing nationalized SDGs targets and indicators established for each relevant government ministry and agency. As of 31 December 2017, the members of the technical working groups were still reviewing the A-SDGs 132 targets and 202 indicators, and their respective baseline, that is expected to be reviewed and verified by the Central Statistics Organization (CSO) in the course of 2018 first quarter.
