Summary

The Gorkha Housing Reconstruction Project, with funding support from the Government of India, aims to directly assist earthquake-affected families in Gorkha district to reconstruct their homes in line with Nepal Government’s reconstruction guidelines, standards and processes through socio-technical facilitation services. The project will support a total of 26,912 beneficiary households from six rural municipalities and two urban municipalities. 

 

 

Background

Government of India (GOI) has partnered with UNDP to provide socio-technical facilitation support to 26,912 house owners, from 42 wards of 2 urban and 6 rural municipalities in Gorkha district, for housing reconstruction. This Nepal Housing reconstruction Project (NHRP) commenced after signing of partnership agreement on 8 March 2018. It enables implementation of the following activities to support the target house owners:

  • Facilitating administrative procedures regarding inclusion, grant release and certification.
  • On-site technical advice and guidance on construction technology, design options, disaster resistant features, government norms, material procurement and construction management.
  • Technical services of design drawings, preparation for building permit process.
  • Capacity building of all project participants, particularly house owners and masons.
  • Concurrent monitoring and quality assurance.
  • Facilitating use of Appropriate Disaster Resistant Technologies.

 

Achievements so far

  • Supported over 24,000 households in Gorkha in constructing their resilient homes post 2015 earthquake, through socio-technical facilitation including designing code-compliant houses, acquiring building permits, accessing housing grants and mobilizing resources.
  • Helped over 2,500 vulnerable households through social mobilization and appropriate building technology to ensure they are not left behind
  • About 2,000 masons were trained on resilient and affordable housing construction
  • Carried out a beneficiary status survey, covering all the targeted households (26,912) in Gorkha
  • Established and activated free Building Permit Studios at Gorkha and Palungtar Municipalities, which assisted more than 3000 homeowners with building design and drawing services
  • Conducted earthquake-safe technology demonstration mobile services through 319 mobile van campaign across the district 
  • As part of social mobilization and awareness campaigns, the project mobilized local cultural groups, produced and broadcast 310 radio programs through local radio stations
  • Awas Nirman Saathis (local masons trained to support reconstruction), social mobilizers and engineers conducted over 244,000 door-to-door visits to support home owners construct their houses.
