GEF Small grants Program was launched by the Global Environment Facility through United Nations Development Program to assist developing countries in fulfilling their commitment of protection of the global environment through local actions.

SGP is sourced with the belief that global environment problems can be addressed effectively if local people are involved in decision-making at all levels within projects and have control over resources. It demonstrated that with a small amount of funding, communities at the grassroots level can make a significant difference in their livelihoods and the environment.

Grant under 6th operational phase (OP6) is now available. SGP invites eligible civil society organizations to submit their concept papers from 1 March through to 30 April 2019.

Focus Areas:

Proposals should meet the criteria under the following GEF thematic areas of

1. Biodiversity Conservation,

2. Protection of International Water,

3. Prevention of Land Degradation and Forest Management,

4. Climate Change and

5. Phasing out use of persistent organic pollutants.

Criterion and extent of financial support:

Concept Papers are invited from national non-government organizations and local community-based organizations. The duration of projects proposed should not exceed 24 months. SGP will consider grants up to USD$50,000. Where co-financing and long-term partnerships is highlighted, higher budgets can be considered if projects can justify same. SGP supports field based participatory approach. Organizations and projects will be given preference to the extent that they:

• Promote innovative community-based initiatives to reduce local environment threats.
• Build local capacity to implement sustainable development strategies creating “local ownership and institutional capabilities.”
• Demonstrate high replicability, co-financing and scaling up potential.
• Foster public awareness on environmental issues as an integral part of the project.
• Address livelihood, equality and gender concerns and sensitivities.
• Involve women, marginalized populations and isolated communities as equal partners in programme implementation.
• Create an impact, influence policies and partnership at the National, Provincial and local levels in the country.
• Generate local knowledge and involvement of communities in planning, flexibility, partnerships and transparency in their approach during implementation of activities in projects.

All submissions should be made using the template. Due to increased number of applications, SGP secretariat will reject applications that do not use SGP template and relevant pre-requisite attachments are absent. Download documents below and fill in the concept paper for submission.
