Draft Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) for Ten (UNDP-supported) National Child Projects under the GEF Africa Minigrids Program (AMP)

December 22, 2021

The Africa Minigrids Program (AMP) is a UNDP-supported technical assistance program for minigrids, funded initially by the Global Environment Facility. The program consists of ten national projects, including one in Somalia.

During the first round of national projects, UNDP prepared the Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) to cover all ten projects. The primary objective of the AMP is to increase electricity access in rural areas by promoting scaled-up commercial investment in renewable energy minigrids. Each national project provides technical support to introduce renewable technologies, with specific components to be implemented over a four-year period. The ESMF and Social and Environmental Standards (SES) are designed to ensure compliance with relevant local, national, and international policies.
