Improving Energy Efficiency of Lighting & Building Appliances
Background
The objective of the project is to facilitate a comprehensive market transformation of the Egyptian market towards the use of more energy efficient electric appliances at a level where cost-efficiency is proven. This is envisaged to be achieved through the combination of regulatory tools such as minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) and information labels, enhanced public awareness, capacity building and attractive financing mechanisms. The project will strengthen the regulatory and institutional framework, develop monitoring and enforcement mechanisms, and provide training to public authorities and other relevant stakeholders. It will explore and test different financial incentives complemented by extensive public outreach campaigns.
Accomplishments
- The project implemented more than 15 energy efficiency lighting pilot projects in various types of buildings through providing technical assistance and co-financing.
- The pilot sites included street lighting for residential compounds, banks, shops, supermarkets, hotels, resorts, libraries, private and public administrative buildings, billboards, where most of the selected buildings could not shift to the use of the CFL because of its technical limitations.
- The pilot sites saw a savings of between 25 and 40 percent of total electricity consumption.
- The project supported in conducting awareness campaigns to the public using volunteers during summer.
- The project launched a creative and ambitious awareness campaign entitled “Watty El Watt” or “Reduce your Watts”. The campaign aims to promote energy efficiency measures, change perceptions and shift the market to become an energy-efficient market.
- Ministry's energy performance standards have been developed for fans and dishwashers and enforced by ministerial decree.
- The project organized training sessions on energy efficiency street lighting code in cooperation with housing and Building research Center (HBRC).
- Training courses on auditing and energy efficiency lighting in buildings in cooperation with MED-ENEC have been conducted.
- Through the project, a study on monitoring and evaluation of S&L program has been implemented.
- In cooperation with EOS, the project has developed LED lamps specifications.
- The project has assisted the Ministry of Housing and Urban Communities to prepare the tender documents for implementing a LED/PV street lighting project.
