Fish Farm Project - UNDP Mozambique
UNDP was a leading partner of the government in the post-disaster phases following the damages caused by Cyclones Idai and Kenneth in 2019. UNDP was particularly key for the technical assistance and organization of the International Donor Conference in Beira which yielded US$1.3 billion in pledges from development partners. UNDP also acted on behalf of UN having provided the leading Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) Specialist to coordinate the assessment. The PDNA is now acknowledged as the main framework for the design and implementation of reconstruction and resilience-building projects and programmes by the government, the UN and development partners.
This leading role of UNDP with other key partners, namely the World Bank and the European Union, also build trust of the government and development partners. UNDP is seen as an accountable and trustful institution to coordinate the government support of recovery and resilience in areas affected by the disasters. In such context, UNDP has established a Multi-Donor Basket Fund (the Mozambique Recovery Facility) to implement short and long-term recovery activities supporting to address the root causes of vulnerability and building resilience to future disasters.
It is within this framework that UNDP has successfully supporting this fish farming project for a fishing community displaced by cyclone Idai.
