Countries and communities are fighting a virus that is upending the way we live, work, and cooperate.

To win, we must solve the “equation of inequity”.

The “Global Dashboard for Vaccine Equity” shows that just 3% of people in low-income countries have received at least one dose of the vaccine compared to over 60% of people in high-income countries.

That is why the Principles announced by the United States are so timely.

They centre on a goal to vaccinate 70% of the world by 2022, which will help to end this pandemic as quickly as possible.

This will require all partners to urgently intensify their support to low-income countries.

For instance, only 7% of people living on the Continent of Africa are fully vaccinated, and the average speed of vaccinations is just over 30,000 people per week.

To fully vaccinate 40% of the Continent by the end of 2021, nearly 600,000 people need to be vaccinated every week -- a 1,700% increase.

Yet objectives like these are achievable if we harness the power of multilateralism.

At the United Nations Development Programme, we are proud to support targets that will provide a “booster shot” to global solidarity.

As part of UN efforts led by the World Health Organization, UNDP is supporting developing countries to roll-out vaccines more rapidly, and more equitably through, for example, the deployment of digital solutions.

Working together, we can finally outpace this virus and secure a more sustainable and more resilient future for all.
